Autumn is one of the most popular months of the year for portrait sessions! After all, we have Indiana Tree’s  is doing their thing with all those vibrant colors, plus you get a chance to really play up your wardrobe with accessories in the crisp weather!

Make use of accessories and clothing that play up the “autumn” feeling. For example, opt for leather boots, leather jackets, cable knit scarves and comfy cardigans. They look amazing on the whole family and can really bring a picture to life.

TIP: Neutrals do really well in the fall against all that foliage. You don’t want to over power with too many colors with all those beautiful golds, oranges, and reds behind you. Add small pops of colors instead or use grey toned colors like sage green or blue grey.

Layer sweaters or cute vests to change the look of the photos without having to change entirely. We can also pair with a cute quilt or plaid blanket from my studio for some different look. I usually have some vintage crates or buckets for the kiddos to sit on too!

Timing is everything. Start paying attention to that shift in weather as summer melts into fall. Usually, in Indiana, Fall leaves start turning around mid October.  I know that I like to plan fall sessions, so chances are I’ve got a session ready for you. I try to keep some week day evenings open just for my existing clients!

I will shoot in September for my clients that love fall photos but don’t want to take their children into the chilly air. So, while things will look very green when we shoot, I will edit the photos to have a more fall look. Paired with cute layers, this will create a great fall photo!

TIP: Location is everything. If it’s autumn, you better believe we’re playing outside in the gorgeous weather. I have a lot of locations to choose from that have particularly pretty backdrops. I’m also open to your suggestions. I have spots that range across the midwest that are just jaw dropping!

Plan for a mid-afternoon to early-evening session, when the light is just gorgeous. I love to shoot an hour or so before sunset. If the area is very shaded with trees we may start even earlier. The days are shorter in the fall, so we need to plan accordingly to get that golden hour light.

What will I make you do during your session?

Play in the woods! Chances are there are leaves on the ground or a few buds lingering around. I may have you throw leaves up into the air or have the kids lay down in them.

Remember, this shoot is all about capturing your family bond and having fun, so let loose and get into the season!

If we are in the city shooting, I will still have you twirl around a light poll or stand somewhere we can see the beautiful trees in the background.

TIP: It can get chilly in autumn, so you may want to bring some necessities on hand. I recommend a lip balm, moisturizer, warm packs for your hands, tissues, and, of course, warm apparel. I will have some of these items but if we are shooting a large extended family session then extras won’t hurt.
